Google Lit Trip Project is due Monday, April 16th

The Google Earth Project is due Monday, April 16th. The two pieces of writing, to be colour coded as outlined below, are due Friday, April 13th. To complete the project you need to do the following:

Step 1

·      Rank order the top elements in your topic area that had the most significant impact on the culture of the Spanish or the Aztec.

Step 2

·      For the element you decided was the 2nd most important please write a 175-200 word write-up for this element. The write-up should include an explanation of the element and how it impacted the culture of the Spanish or the Aztec. Ensure to provide specific supporting examples to support your opinion. See the example below as to what this should look like. You should also identify one image to accompany your write-up.

Step 3

·      For the element you decided had the most significant impact on Spanish/Aztec culture you are asked to do the same as above, but create a short iMovie with images and a voice over reading your script.

Please include the following characteristics of powerful writing in your writing pieces. To ensure these characteristics are present, please hand in both written scripts, colour coding the following characteristics:

Colour code your Hook in red: this should include an engaging opening that introduces your topic and grabs the reader’s attention. For strategies to do this see this link.
·
Colour code in blue at least 7 examples of descriptive and sophisticated word choice: Strategies: Consciously add more descriptive, sophisticated language. Use powerful, more original verbs (walked-sauntered, worked-toiled). Adopt adverb- verb combinations (slowly sauntered; one must carefully consider).

Colour code in purple two examples of transitions (i.e., In addition, Further, For example, Specifically,). See this link examples of transitions.

Colour code in green at least two specific supporting details:
These can include specific terms, names, dates and other specific historical facts unique to your topic area.

Colour code in orange examples of varied sentence openings and types. To do this, highlight two sentences where you begin with an active “ing” verb, one sentence that is short and two sentences that are complex sentences with more than one idea joined together. For strategies and examples of how to do this see this link.

Example of a student 4:

1.      The Aztecs, an unyielding people, were determined to fulfill their destiny, but what gave them this divine purpose? This can be attributed to a proclamation from their patron God to search from land to land until they found the incarnation of Huitzilopochtli - an eagle standing on a cactus holding a snake in its beak. This long and spiritual journey shaped the Aztecs into an unforgiving and rugged society. Wandering resolutely through the Valley of Mexico they lived a semi – nomadic life for nearly 200 years, searching for this sign from their holy and spiritual overlord. However, this long journey through what is now known as the Valley of Mexico was not an undemanding pilgrimage to endure. The most extensive struggle that the Aztecs had was battling other tribes. Not only was it hard to be prepared and ready for battle when constantly moving, but in some cases warriors were actually held captive and enslaved by such brutal groups as the Tepanec and the Culhua. Throughout this hardship and struggle that they were forced to undergo there was a crucial skill developed. Skills in battle. Soon these abilities earned them the reputation of being one of the most brutal, powerful, and unsparing tribes because of their ruthless tactics in battle. Without this historical event the Aztecs could have been defeated long before the Conquistadors because they would have lacked in this crucial area of war.

An example of what this will look like is as follows:

The Spanish Reconquista was a bloody, brutal, and prolonged struggle over the fate of the Iberian peninsula lasting over 700 years. In 1492, the newly unified Kingdoms of Aragon and Castile finally prevailed over the Moors to push these Islamic peoples out of the peninsula forever. Spain’s troubles were far from over. The end of the Reconquista decreased Spain's need for a large military force, and Spanish nobles were inconveniantly forced to look to land ownership as a means to support themselves financially. Since farmland was in limited supply in Spain, many Spanish nobles had scant means to make an income. Further, the Spanish nobility had a profound sense of honour which prevented them from taking jobs that involved learning a trade or physical labour. Lacking an ability to attain land ownership, some Spanish nobles became businessmen or entered commerce. Others turned their attention to Spain's activity in the New World as a means to support themselves and possibly find gold and great wealth. In addition to wealth, many Spanish nobles hoped to achieve fame, glory and to make a name for themselves, as well as earn increased respect from Spanish society, by becoming Conquistadors in the New World.

Step 4: Create a Google Lit trip or KMZ file

·      To make a google Lit Trip or TMZ file, begin by creating a file on your desktop where you will house your writing pieces along with any images you plan to use.

·      Export your iMovie to Quick time then create a Vimeo or YouTube account (you can use mine), which will allow you to upload your video on-line.

·      Only begin this portion when all your writing has been completed, your video has been uploaded, and you have the images you need. In your group of three decide who will create the Google file on their computer.

·      As a group, begin with the first member and following the instructions below, create a marker for this person’s 1st and 2nd significant element and then label this marker with a title and place in either the video or the writing pieces with accompanying image.  At the end you should have six labeled markers (i.e., Spanish Inquisition, 150 year long migration of the Aztec). Note that for historical events you will have to decide where an appropriate marker would land, even if this event occurred in different areas.

·      Video instructions on how to do this as well as package your file can be found in the following links:
