Preparation for Thursday, May 10th novel Discussion Assignment

Just a reminder to make sure you have posted your discussion questions and a recording of the discussion you led on the novel study wiki. I will be using this for a mark in communication.

To help guide the discussions that will take place tomorrow we will divide up the Talking to the Text areas attached so that each group member will bring something to contribute to the discussion. Because there are six elements,  more than one student will be assigned to each element.

As a formal assignment you are asked to contribute one of the following areas to tomorrow's discussion:

  • A summarizer: responsible for summarizing what happened in the chapter
  • A connector: responsible for taking two passages or quotes and connecting them to their own experiences or others things they have read or seen and/or events in the world
  • Golden nugget identifier: Responsible for taking out three of the most important lines or passages in the chapter and explaining their significance
  • Questioner: Responsible for bringing three good discussion not yes/no questions that will help us explore themes and important events in the chapter
  • Monitor meaning: Responsible for identifying at least five words that are new or are examples of rich, descriptive language and worth knowing. You must also provide the definition
  • Visualizer: Responsible for bringing two pictures or image that reflect important events or themes in the chapter

Tomorrow's discussion will be formally marked and you will receive a communication mark
based on your ability to fully explain and elaborate on your talking to the text element along with the level of contribution you bring to this discussion in general.

You are asked to hand in this talking to the text response in hard copy form at the end of the discussion.

I will give you time in class today to finish this task.

You will be marked based on the following criteria for a 4:

  • Discussant comes prepared at the beginning of class with their novel and printed out talking to the text response in hard copy form /4
  • Discussant introduces their findings from their talking to the text element, elaborates on their thoughts and insights, and is able to prompt further discussion and dialogue around their thoughts and ideas /8
  • When not introducing their element, discussant actively participates in the book club discussion responding to other discussants thoughts and ideas and thus building on and adding to what has been said /8

You will receive a mark out of 20 for this assignment, which will go towards your communication mark.

You will receive a handout in class as follows:

*Response (golden nuggets-3 key quotes, 2 images, 5-6 examples of rich language, 2 connections, summary, 3 quality questions that engage central themes):

*You will be marked on having this prepared before hand and your own reflections and responses to your element (i.e., responses to your questions, why the images you chose was significant, how the words you chose fit into key passages in the novel, why these quotes are important, how the summary speaks to major themes in the novel and what events seemed most important, responses to your connections.
